Russ Abbot (born Russell Allan Roberts on 18 September 1947 in Chester[1], England) is an English musician, comedian, and actor. He rose to fame in the 1970s as the lead singer and drummer of the novelty band The Black Abbots. Moving to television, he was a regular on the variety program Russ Abbot’s Madhouse (1980–85) and its follow-up, The Russ Abbot Show (1986–96), a sketch show where he excelled, creating iconic characters such as Basildon Bond, Cooperman, and C.U. Jimmy.
As a performer, Abbot’s range was not limited to comedy; he became a serious actor, starring in television drama series such as September Song (1993–95), for which he played Ted Fenwick, a widowed ex-teacher. He could also grace popular series, such as Last of the Summer Wine (2008) and Boomers (2014–2016), displaying his continuing wide range.
In addition to his work on television, Abbot released several music singles, the most successful being the 1985 song “Atmosphere” – a UK Top 10 hit. His talents for providing a lasting legacy in British entertainment were his most incredible legacy.
