Popular English actress, writer, and comedienne Caroline Aherne, who wrote and starred in the BAFTA award-winning programme The Royle Family. Aherne, born December 24, 1963, was noted for her acerbic wit and gift for creating down-to-earth working-class characters. She starred in The Mrs Merton Show, a satirical chat show where she played droll, straight-faced host Mrs. Merton. Aherne was already considered something of a comedy legend, thanks to her work within the British television sphere in general and with sitcoms in particular. And she died on July 2, 2016, at the age of 95, but her impact persists in comedy.
