Gerry Adams is a prominent Irish republican politician who served as president of Sinn Féin from 1983 to 2018. Born in Belfast in 1948, he became involved in the civil rights movement in the late 1960s and later joined Sinn Féin. Adams was elected as a Member of Parliament for Belfast West in 1983 but, in line with Sinn Féin’s policy, did not take his seat in the British House of Commons. He represented Belfast West in the Northern Ireland Assembly from 1998 to 2010 and served as a Teachta Dála (TD) for Louth in the Irish parliament from 2011 to 2020.
Throughout his leadership, Adams played a significant role in the Northern Ireland peace process, engaging in talks with both the British and Irish governments. In 2005, the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) declared an end to its armed campaign, and Adams has been credited with steering Sinn Féin toward a more mainstream political approach.
Adams has consistently denied any involvement with the IRA, despite allegations and accusations linking him to the organization. In 2014, he was arrested in connection with the 1972 abduction and murder of Jean McConville but was released without charge. In 2025, he won a libel case against the BBC over a report alleging he sanctioned the killing of Denis Donaldson, a former IRA member turned informant.
Adams stepped down as Sinn Féin president in 2018 and was succeeded by Mary Lou McDonald. Since then, he has remained active in Irish politics and public life, occasionally commenting on current affairs and the legacy of the peace process.
